79 Touches, 100% Duels Won: Takehiro Tomiyasu Brilliant Performance Against Burnley

Arsenal continued to build a bit of momentum in their season with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Burnley this weekend at Turf Moor. Martin Odegaard’s goal was enough for the Gunners to snatch all three points.

The Gunners battled well against the usual dogged and determined performance from the Clarets. Mikel Arteta will have been delighted with the effort of his team, too.

One of the pleasing aspects for the Spaniard will have been keeping the clean-sheet. Aaron Ramsdale played his part, as did the back four in general.

However, the biggest shining light out of all the Arsenal stars on display was new signing, Takehiro Tomiyasu. The Japanese defender was, once again, superb at the back and showed all the qualities Arteta has been looking for.

Stats don’t lie for Tomiyasu at Burnley

It has to be said, since he made his debut last weekend, Tomiyasu has looked an astute piece of business by Edu and Arsenal. He’s slotted in seamlessly, and seems to be Premier League ready.

Indeed, the stats from his performance at Burnley backup just how effective Tomiyasu could prove to be for Arsenal.

Tomiyasu had the most touches (79) out of all the Arsenal players in the XI. More impressively, he won 100% of his aerial duels, and another 100% of his ground duels.

In defence, he was brilliant. He made five recoveries and five clearances, all the while helping further forward as well.

It is safe to say, then, that Tomiyasu is looking a bargain buy. At just £15.5m this summer, it’s hard to say the Gunners could have done much better.

Of course, sterner tests than Burnley and Norwich await. But on the evidence we have seen so far, Tomiyasu is just what Arsenal needed.
