N’golo Kante was enjoying another stellar performance at the weekend against Tottenham before an injury cruelly ended his afternoon early.
The Frenchman was looking back to his best alongside Jorginho, dominating the midfield battle for the majority of the 90 minutes.
In a fluid and unique system deployed by Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea performed as well as they have in years on the pitch, with Kante at the heart of everything good happening at Stamford Bridge.
Tuchel brought on Conor Gallagher as his injury replacement, with him making his second cameo as a Chelsea player.
Even in the brief time he was on the pitch, the Englishman showed he has the quality to compete at a level above Crystal Palace where he impressed on loan last season.
With the top three midfielders, Jorginho, Kante and Mateo Kovacic so highly regarded at the top of the game, it is difficult for anyone coming into that group to impress enough to see regular gametime.
Unmissable opportunity for Gallagher
However, with the Croatian also suffering from injuries to begin the campaign, it seems Gallagher is being handed an unmissable opportunity to make a statement.
The upcoming fixture against Leeds United could be a match which suits his strengths too, with the midfield battle likely to be crucial in determining the result.
His ability to win the ball back high up the pitch was highlighted as a key trait of his over the last season, with it even on show a number of times against Spurs at the weekend.
If he can do this on Sunday, it could see the Blues start attacks from positions high up the pitch, allowing them to catch Jesse March’s side out.
With the work-rate seen by Mason Mount in last week’s exhausting heat, it is for sure that he won’t be alone in his quest to dominate the middle of the park.
