Thomas Tuchel found it disappointing and improper after which the match official referee spotted laughing and smiling with Carlos Ancelotti. Chelsea won 3-2 at the Bernabeu Stadium in the second leg of their last-eight tie, but were eliminated on aggregate and only after extra time in Madrid.
Chelsea’s hopes of a miraculous comeback were dashed by Karim Benzema’s late header, but German coach Tuchel was left to lament Marcos Alonso’s disallowed goal amongst many other troubling situations.
At full time, Tuchel blasted the referee for “laughing and smiling” with Real manager Carlo Ancelotti.
“I’m disappointed that the referee had a wonderful time with Carlo Ancelotti, my colleague,” Tuchel stated. “I know Carlo is a gentleman and a kind guy, but when I went to thank him, he was smiling and laughing loudly with the opposing coach.”
“I believe this is the absolute worst time to do this, after 126 minutes of one team giving everything they have, fighting to the very last drop.”
“You go back as a coach and witness the referee laughing and smiling with the other coach.” I believe it is really improper.”
