Thomas Tuchel reveals reason Chelsea may not qualify for Champions League after key player injury

Thomas Tuchel blasted the referee for "laughing and smiling with Carlos Ancelotti

Tuchel is certain that they still have a lot of work to do in the race for the top four, despite the fact that Tottenham and Arsenal are both putting pressure on them.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has told his players that they face losing their Champions League qualifying after a performance that infuriated the German.

Chelsea has taken four points from its last four games, surrendering seven goals in the process, and their performance at Goodison Park highlighted all of their squad’s flaws, including its inability to score and hold a clean sheet.

Tuchel claimed he kept £97 million striker Romelu Lukaku on the bench because Jorginho’s injury in the first half limited his choices. The head coach was particularly irritated by referee Kevin Friend’s performance, questioning why some of Everton’s ferocious action went unpunished.

But Tuchel was quick to point out that he was dissatisfied with Chelsea’s performance, which was highlighted by Cesar Azplicueta’s rare error in gifting Richarlison the game’s only goal.

With both Tottenham and Arsenal putting pressure on them in the fight for the top four, he insists they still have a lot of work to do – and that any further decline in standards will leave them open to a late comeback.
